Research interests:

Constructing precise chronologies for archaeological sites, standing buildings, and the wider historic environment, using scientific dating techniques and Bayesian chronological modelling to combine the results with archaeological and historical information.

Career history:

My career began as a field archaeologist, largely employed in the commercial sector on excavations undertaken in advance of development. I then became scientific dating co-ordinator for English Heritage, fostering the routine use of Bayesian chronological modelling for interpreting archaeological chronologies in England. This led to a number of pioneering synthetic studies to understand particular aspects of past lifeways, first in Britain and more recently in Europe as well. In 2004 I was invited to become a member of the IntCal Working Group, which works on improving the radiocarbon calibration curve. In 2013 I joined the University of Stirling, where I am undertaking a major study with partners from the US and Poland on dating occupation on the site of Çatalhöyük East in Turkey.
