CESD/Modelling Opportunities
The Centre for Earth System Dynamics (CESD), within the SAGES pooling
initiative (Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment and Society,
www.sages.ac.uk) is running a one-day course to help researchers to explore
whether they can use the Met Office's "Unified Model"
The day presents principles of climate modelling and then emphasises the use
of UM version 4.5 with the global model HadCM3 and the regional model HadRM3
(typically run at 25km resolution). The Unified Model is so called because
it united weather and climate modelling, which had previously been in
separate codes.
Most participants in the day will be considering use of the model to
generate data representing future, current or past climates - for example
monthly, annual or decadal patterns of rainfall and temperatures. The day
will give a broad understanding of climate modelling with the Unified Model,
with only a high-level description of the software and its engineering.
Researchers from institutions in one of the Scottish pooling initiatives are
invited to attend. It is hoped that cross-initiative collaboration might be
encouraged by the day.
Where: Crew Building, Kings Buildings, Edinburgh
When: Friday May 14, Edinburgh 11am-5pm

Registration closes on Friday May 7th.
If you have further questions about the event, or about the possible
relevance of the UM to your research, please contact me.
