Post-doctoral Research Associate in Ocean Acidification Research
Salary: £28,983 - £35,646
We are looking for a talented and highly motivated postdoctoral scientist for a 3-year research project examining the impacts of ocean acidification on two important marine calcifiers, cold-water corals (Lophelia pertusa) and coralline algae (maerl). This work forms a component of a new benthic research consortium funded through the UK’s £12m Ocean Acidification Research Programme.
The appointee should be prepared to carry out fieldwork and work at sea on ocean-going research cruises. Although desirable, prior experience of ocean acidification and biomineralisation research is not essential.
The position is based within the School of Life Sciences on the University’s Edinburgh campus. Heriot-Watt University has a 100 year tradition of University level higher education, while the School of Life Sciences was recently voted to be within the top three Scottish Universities for Biosciences Education. PhD Opportunities
Marine Renewable Energy and the Environment
The UHI Millennium Institute (UHI) is the ‘emergent university of the Highlands and Islands’.
Through funding secured from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the European Regional
Development Fund and the Scottish Funding Council, the UHI is delighted to offer six new PhD
opportunities at two of its academic partners, the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) at North
Highland College in Thurso and the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) in Oban.
Projects are fully funded and will address some of the key environmental issues underpinning the
development of marine renewable energy.
Six projects (four at ERI and two at SAMS) will be supported from the following:
At the ERI, Thurso:
· Assessing movements of seabirds in relation to marine renewable energy
· Tidal races in the Pentland Firth as an obstacle to tidal stream energy development.
· The meteorological forcing of current and sea level anomalies in Pentland Firth
· Temporal variability in benthic habitats of the Pentland Firth
· Weather window constraints and costs for marine power
· Practical methods for the estimation of surface waves within a tidal channel; The Inner
Sound, Pentland Firth, Scotland
· Tidal energy and the matching of supply and demand over the UK Grid
Full descriptions of these projects and details of how to apply can be found at www.eri.ac.uk
At SAMS, Oban:
· Marine Spatial Planning, innovation and renewable energy – supporting a transition to
sustainable regional economies
· Sensitivity of biogenic reef forming organisms and commercially important benthic
invertebrates in an era of marine renewable development
Full descriptions of these projects and details of how to apply can be found at www.sams.ac.uk
Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a first class or upper second-class honours degree
(or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. Each position will be salaried at c. £16,800.
Closing date for receipt of applications is Wednesday 14th July.

Marine Renewable Energy
Post Doctoral Research
Associates / Research Fellows
PDRA £23,228 – 26,864; Research Fellow £26,864 – 34,767
The waters round Scotland are estimated to hold 10% of the European wave
and 25% of the European tidal energy resource. While marine renewable
technologies are advancing well, major environmental questions present ongoing
challenges to the development of the sector.
The Environmental Research Institute (ERI) of the North Highland College in
Thurso and the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) in Oban are
partners in the UHI Millennium Institute (UHI); the ‘emergent university of the
Highlands and Islands’. Together we have secured £4 M funding from the
European Regional Development Fund, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and
Scottish Funding Council, for a unique multi-disciplinary research programme,
Marine Renewable Energy and the Environment (MaREE) to address these
key environmental issues.
We now seek to appoint dynamic, enthusiastic and well-motivated research
scientists to address environmental research priorities in the following areas:
Climatology, physical oceanography & remote sensing
Specialities of particular interest are tides (modelling & measurement), waves
(modelling, measurement & climate), marine meteorology (e.g. weather
windowing) and interactions of currents, waves, bathymetry and structures.
Sustainable development
Integrating social, economic & environmental aspects of marine renewables.
For further information on these exciting opportunities and details of how to
apply please visit www.eri.ac.uk
Closing date for receipt applications is 23 July 2010
