SAGES Launch - 25th May 2007
The Royal Society of Edinburgh lecture theatre was at capacity, as over 100 SAGES members and 40 guests descended on Edinburgh for the Launch of SAGES on Friday 25th May, 2007.
SAGES members attended from all the partner institutions, and guests represented SEPA, SNH, Carnegie Trust, the Macaulay Institute, BGS, the Royal Botanical Gardens, SCRI, ECRR, CEH, SEERAD & The Scottish Executive and the National Oceanography Centre. In particular, we were grateful to Prof. Aubrey Manning (Professor Emeritus, University of Edinburgh) for chairing our official launch session, and to Prof. Alan Thorpe (NERC), Prof. Anne Glover (Chief Scientific Advisor for Scotland, Scottish Executive), Roger McClure (Scottish Funding Council), Prof. Grahame Bulfield (Edinburgh University), Stewart Stevenson MSP (Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change), and Prof. Tom Crowley (the soon-to-become new SAGES Director) for their engaging talks.
In the 'science' part of the day, the audience was treated to presentations from representatives of each SAGES Theme: Paul Bishop (Glasgow), Andrew Tyler (Stirling), John Grace (Edinburgh), Iain Young (Abertay), Sandy Tudhope (Edinburgh), Graham Shimmield (SAMS), Simon Tett (Edinburgh) and Mark Rounsevell (Edinburgh) presented thought-provoking talks, giving everyone a taster of what SAGES is about, and something to mull over during the wine reception later...
